Chulitna Lodge Featurette with Justin Richards

Since 2013, I have been spending my summers in a remote area of Alaska, where I help maintain the facilities at Chulitna Lodge Wilderness Retreat– a one-time hunting lodge that now caters to artists, including writers, musicians, dancers, photographers, and woodworkers.

A benefit to living and working in this unique and inspiring environment is that I have plenty of time to pursue my own practice, with the tools and materials to expand beyond my familiar operations. This short video includes some background to my role at Chulitna, as well as a peek into the concept and process behind one of my projects: a reinterpretation of Eleven34, the precision-crafted walnut stool made during my residency at Anderson Ranch Arts Center; in fact, one might consider the redux a more faithful interpretation of the initial concept behind Eleven34!
